Drop in Lettuce Supply For the First Time in Months

This week’s Market News update features vital information regarding the produce industry. Here are some key points to consider when preparing for the upcoming weeks:

LETTUCE: Supplies this week will be lower than the budget for the first time in months. The cold weather that had been holding fields back has finally changed and now we are back to the cut it or lose it game. Lower supplies and higher demand equate to higher prices this week.

ONIONS: Demand has been good this week. Reds have been tight, but it’s still pretty even across the board. The quality of both areas has been very good. Truck availability has played a very key role in where we are placing our orders the past several weeks.

SPINACH: Cool foggy mornings are causing some mildew and warmer afternoons are causing more insect presence.

SQUASH: Zucchini and yellow squash market will strengthen as growers are walking away from fields. California will be on a heat advisory starting Thursday through Monday.

WATERMELON: With CA and AZ headed into full swing production now is an excellent time to promote watermelon sales. Quality continues to be very good to excellent across the board and we show little sign of change in this.
